(The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation)

Rich Harwoodís nationwide tour to share the message of his latest book, Hope Unraveled: The Peopleís Retreat and Our Way Back, has been met with strong support from citizens who agree that we must set out on an alternate path for politics and public life.

  • In Kansas City, Rich spoke with a small group of catalytic leaders who are developing a civic engagement initiative for the community. As a result of that conversation, we are now working with the Kansas City Public Library and officials at the American Library Association on figuring out more ways to engage people around the book.
  • In Seattle, dozens of foundation leaders from across the country heard Rich speak about the book and its implications for community foundations ñ one of the most critical boundary-spanning organizations left in our communities. Several of those foundations have asked us to bring the message to their staffs, trustees, grantees, and donors.
  • In Las Vegas, the Nevada Community Foundation ñ a foundation dedicated to building community ñ hosted a reception of 70 leaders in the community who want to work with us on building a more robust and vibrant public life in this rapidly growing region. Richís tour stop also included a book party hosted by local community leaders, an appearance on an award-winning local talk show, coverage in the first morning edition of the Las Vegas Sun in 15 years, and a spirited conversation with employees of Clark County, Nevada.

Our tour continues the week of Oct. 17 in Portland and San Francisco. We have a number of events planned. If you live near either area and would like to become involved, please contact Mike Wood at 301-656-3669 or http://dev.theharwoodinstitute.org/media/mwood@theharwoodinstitute.org.

Harness The Harwood Institute's 20 years of knowledge on accelerating community change

Join us for the 2006 Harwood Public Innovators Lab

In Hope Unraveled, Rich Harwood writes about what it will take for all of us to get on an alternate path for politics and public life. We know that there is an urgent need for community-based organizations that cut across divisions in communities ñ that span boundaries and know how to be catalytic in their work. We also know we must generate a new cadre of leaders whose words and actions are guided by sensibilities and practices that promote credibility and trust in society.

The fundamental question, though, is ìHow?î Thatís why weíve created the Harwood Public Innovators Lab.

The lab is an intensely focused, highly interactive experience where we will expose you to the Harwood sensibilities and practices and help you discover how to activate them for yourself, your organization, and your community. The four-day experience is organized around a set of modules that represent the most comprehensive collection of our core frameworks to date. It is designed particularly for those people who want to expand and deepen their knowledge around creating change.

The Spring 2006 Public Innovators Lab will be take place Sunday, May 21-Thursday, May 25 at the Pier 5 Hotel on Baltimoreís Inner Harbor. Click here to sign up.

National leaders offer praise for Hope Unraveled

"Over the past two decades, no one has been listening to the American people more attentively than Richard Harwood. This book eloquently summarizes what he has learned ñ the growing disconnect between the people and their political institutions, why it matters, and what we can do to begin turning the tide."

-William A. Galston, Saul Stern Professor of Public Affairs, University of Maryland

ìRichard Harwood has given us an accessible glimpse into how Americans perceive politics and public life. More importantly, the author challenges us to examine our part in the lives of our communities and our nation. Central to the book is the notion of authentic hope ñ an affirmation to engage in collective conversations that foster a sense of shared purpose and, ultimately, effect change for the public good.î

-William Milliken, Founder, Communities in Schools
