(The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation)How can community foundations build the civic strength of the communities they serve and fulfill their missions with excellence during a time when people are retreating from public life and politics?

That is the question Rich Rich Harwood will address tomorrow at 11 a.m. EST on a live Web cast, sponsored by Community Foundations of America and open to all staff, board members, and executives of community foundations. The discussion will be based on findings in Rich's latest book, Hope Unraveled: The People's Retreat and Our Way Back.

Community foundations are one of the few remaining kinds of "boundary-spanning" organizations left in communities. In other words, they are able, by their very nature, to reach across sectors and bring people together to deal with public issues collectively. The Harwood Institute works with boundary-spanning organizations across the country to help them become "catalytic organizations" by learning to apply Harwood principles, tools, and frameworks in their daily work.

One such organization is the Nevada Community Foundation. NCF has partnered with The Harwood Institute to learn how to create a community-advised funding system, led by ordinary citizens, that will make decisions on how to allocated $3 million in funds for the community. The Institute is working with the group to give them a deep understanding of how communities work so that they can make highly strategic funding choices that build what The Harwood Institute calls "public capital" - the relationships, structures, networks, and norms that make communities work. (A project description can be found here.)

To register for tomorrow's free Web cast, go to the Community Foundations of America Web site at http://www.cfamerica.org/. If you are interested in learning more about our work with NCF, or how your own organization can become catalytic, contact Jill Freeman, project manager, at 301-656-3669.
