Harwood public innovators tell their stories
Monday, January 30, 2006
(The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation)Over the next few months, The Harwood Institute
will be featuring stories from some of the
public innovators we have had the fortune of
working with over the years.
Public innovators are highly pragmatic but
also idealistic change agents. Along with
catalytic organizations, these individuals are
essential ingredients for making any community
work. Much of The Harwood Institute's work in
communities focuses on expanding the core
competencies of public innovators.
Our first public innovator is Pete Hutchinson from Flint, Michigan. Pete was involved in The Harwood Institute's seven-year change initiative in Flint.
Here are some excerpts from a document he recently submitted to the Institute on his recollections of his participation in Flint's Place for Public Ideas. The Place is the forerunner to the Harwood Public Innovators Lab.
In February, 1999, 14 Flint stalwarts began a journey through the Place for Public Ideas. The first session centered on identifying common aspirations and building trust amongst the class. It should be noted that many of us did not know one another prior to meeting in the Place. If you, like Pete want to deepen your capacity to create change in your community, then consider joining us for this spring's Harwood Public Innovators Lab in Baltimore, MD.
There has been a community impact created by the Place. This impact can not necessarily be assessed seeing a direct correlation between intentional initiatives of the Place and programs taking place in the community. However, based on the participants involved in different initiatives that are also Place alumni it is safe to assume that there is more than a little influence from the Place is in each of the initiatives. We have streamlined and re-packaged much of
the same intellectual capital from our work in
Flint - which unfolded over seven years through
a multi-million dollar investement on behalf of
the C.S. Mott Foundation - into a low-cost,
four-day experience unlike any traditional
leadership training seminar in which you have
participated.

the Innovators Lab and sign up today. Space is
limited and seats are filling fast for the
spring session.
